The holiday season was good to me. – Stuffed my face over Thanksgiving and spent some quality time with my family, – Jaunted over to Sierra Leone with my mum for Christmas. – Visited my dad (him being buried in Sierra Leone is bittersweet, as I don’t get to visit as often as I’d like.) – Finished up the year in Wisconsin with my sister and brother-in-law.
January is trudging along. I’m just here listening to Emma G. This month’s episode has her all vinyl demo mix from 2006 and it’s so good! So many amazing tracks came out during that era.
Mondays suck after you’ve had an enjoyable weekend.
I’ve made new friends in LA, but it’s still such a treat to see my besties. Adult life is not for the weak. Navigating families, time off, kids, and packed schedules makes it hard to find quality time with your people, especially when they don’t live nearby.
I’m fortunate to have close friendships that span 20 to 30 years. Most of those friends are in Minnesota, Chicago, or overseas, so I don’t get to see them often. Luckily, one of my Chicago besties moved to San Diego, so it was nice to get a good girl hang in for a couple of days.
I really don’t feel like switching to work mode now. 😭
Listening to another one of my besties and working on getting this module ready for UAT.
I’m here. Toiling my summer away. I am whinging about working through the summer, like it wasn’t me that made the decision to not work in academia anymore.
Instead, I guess I have to just get used to having an end of summer getaway of some sort. I’m tagging along to Sun and Bass again this year, so I am trying to keep my moaning at bay and wait for that trip.
Haven’t really been to many shows as of late. Just spending my time mixing in my bedroom and still listening to heaps of dnb as per usual.
I really enjoyed the Pola & Bryson album. My faves:
The weather’s quite lovely. I’m working at one of the standing desks and taking in the downtown LA views, listening to Klute.
I can’t remember if I said I got a new job or not. Anyway, I no longer teach and it’s quite odd to get back into the environment where summer holiday is not a thing like it is when you are working at a school.
I am enjoying the summer though. Headed to SD this weekend to go hang with some of my faves. I’m looking forward to it!
Working away and listening to this wonderful gift GLXY bestowed upon us. 😍
Summer is a vibe indeed! So many good tunes out right now. Not too much to report. I’m just enjoying the weather, hanging out with friends, and listening to good tunes.
Hope you guys are having a good summer too! Xx
You know all I do is stan TNQ. 😂
I am a huge Satl fan. This whole EP with him and Brandy Haze is soooo good. I can’t lie though, I was hoping “On Site” would be on this EP. I’ve been obsessed with that track for a minute now. I’ll keep waiting for it’s release, but in the meantime the LA Fling EP is 🔥🔥🔥.
Super duper late, but anyway, yes, I went to the TNQ night at Amsterdam Dance Event last month. I had so much fun! It was great to see Greg, and Flight was there as well. I hadn’t seen her in ages. It was nice to catch up. Me and my old lady raver bones lasted the whole night! Great sets all around.
I was in London to wrap up the last of my dad’s estate situation. It was nice to get a mini break from the sadness and go rave and hang out with friends and listen to great tunes. 🥰
Also got to check out Kool FM while I was in London. Me and Kathy went to keep Alicia company during her show. As a long time jungle raver, getting to go hang at Kool FM was pretty dope. Alicia had a great set as always and I kept say to the ladies how fun it was just to sit in a room, hang out with friends and listening to dnb really loudly. I mean I do that on my own all the time, but it was nice to do it with my friends. 😊
I love having the Kool FM/Rinse FM app. I listen to great mixes constantly. Not sharing a mix today, but I am currently obsessed with these 2 tunes and have had them on repeat for like 4 days. I had definitely heard both of them before on some other mixes, but didn’t know who they were by. I hyper-fixate like nobody’s business. I’ll write down which mix I heard a tune on and the minute count so I can keep going back to trainspot it until I know who it’s by. 😂
Love me some Echo Brown.
This is track is soooo good.
Headed to New Jersey this weekend. Going to spend Thanksgiving with my brother and my whole family is going to be there. That hasn’t happened in a while. I’m super excited about it. Happy Turkey Day to those of you that celebrate. 🦃🦃🦃
I’m so sick of starting my entries with “I’m so busy..” or “I’ve got so much homework..” so instead lets talk about how much old skool jungle I’ve consumed over the past week.
That 5 hour Rinse FM/Kool FM tribute was so lovely. I listened to the whole thing. RIP Skibz.
I also just wanted to repost some classics that I could listen to forever. They never fail to get me moving and I get just as geeked as the first time I heard them. I may be swamped with work but I’ve def been raving the whole time I’ve been doing it.
When I first started mixing back in ’97, a really great group of dudes let me join their crew. I hung out with them all the time and got to obsess over jungle as much as I pleased with non-stop mixing, non-stop Kool FM tapes, and endless raving. I think back on that period of time so fondly because of this crew.
Here’s a retrospective mix beautiful mixed by one of those dudes and co-anchored by another. Living in Minneapolis and rolling with JVC was such a fun and wild ride. Dave and Sean, you killed this mix.
So many great classics. That Dj Zinc remix of Congo Natty’s Junglist… always a banger. This mix def transported me back to raving in sweaty basements and having the time of my life.
The other day, I was thinking about when I first heard jungle/dnb, back in ’94. It was courtesy of my younger sister, who was still living at home in London, while I was in America. I came back to America after summer holidays, trying my damndest to get a hold of all the Kool FM recordings possible. I was fortunate that my cousins used to send me tapes every once in a while, but it was really due to the different crews and djs that I met along the way, that I was able to stay up to date with the latest tunes, before I started djing and getting them for myself. So I always show love to my peeps whenever I can.
Not 1, but 2 dope mixes to share today, from my faves. 😍😍😍
