Today’s Oldie: Everything But The Girl – Blame (J Majik Remix) – Virgin 1999 I can tell you where I lost every record I’ve ever lost. LOL. The whole losing of the record is always so traumatic for me (god I love to exaggerate) that I remember the moment like it was yesterday. I love this remix. Like love love love it. It just evoked such a happy warm feeling that I always got excited when it came on. I loved the Everything But The Girl original and I just think that J Majik did a lovely job with the remix. I mixed at this huge new years eve party that year. It was about to be ’00 and the party was just insane.  I had a blast but there was seriously like 12 of us mixing from around 9pm to about 6am and all our records got mixed together due to the debauchery that was taking place. I’m usually pretty anal about watching over my records but these were all my really close friends so I was kinda lax about putting them away. When i got home the next evening, yes next evening, LOL, I was putting my records away and that record was nowhere to be found. It was part of a remix LP and I only had the other record with the other remixes that I didn’t like on it. Boo. I remember hounding Jimmy about whether or not he’d seen it and was so gutted. Lame. I know one of my friends probably has it but their record collections were all ridiculously huge and there wasn’t really any intense hunting going on to find it. I couldn’t find another copy of it around that time and just was so bummed. I had actually forgotten about it until today. I just found a copy online and bought it. Yay. This oldies section is doing wonders for replenishing my record collection. 😉

On a completely unrelated dnb note, can I just say how much I love True Blood? Definitely my favourite show this tv season. It’s about vampires and it’s crazy and weird and all the actors on it are awesome. They call the people that like to associate with vampires fangbangers and I think that is hilarious. Good show.

Today’s Oldie: Armand Van Helden – Ain’t Armand – AV8 Records 1997 I owe Brandon for this magnificent oldie, he was the one that reminded me of it. This was one of the first records I added to my collection. It came out around the r&b dnb era. I know that there are a lot of r&b dnb tracks now but I remember back then it was like every r&b song known to man had a remix. I was super into Monica during that time and thought this track was amazing! LOL. A classic nonetheless.

Oh Hello Winter…

It is brrrr cold. Dang. I refuse to wear my winter coat yet though. I’m in straight denial. 30 degrees? Bah. Bring it on.

I actually had a really good weekend. On Friday Asides‘ good buddy Stefano (he does an awesome event in Sardinia every year called Sun & Bass) was in town and we hung out. The one thing I like about hanging out with friends of friends is that there’s never a worry that they won’t be cool. They wouldn’t be friends with someone you’re friends with if they weren’t right? We went to an art show at the Burger King Studio… Yes I did say Burger King Studio and then headed over to Bass Goes Boom, which I must say has been consistently fun ever since it started. Good times.

Friday I went to Milwaukee to hang out with my friend Mollie. She lives in L.A. and I still have yet to get out there to visit her so whenever she’s in close proximity to me I try and go see her. She’s an old buddy from Minneapolis and i love her to pieces.

We start yet another week. I’m in good spirits. 🙂

Today’s Oldie: Dj Die – Timing Mechanism – Full Cycle 2000 That Suv track I put on Friday’s oldie was part of this same LP that Timing Mechanism is on. I remember when I got this LP i totally slept on this Die track. I used to have a bad habit of doing that. I only bought the LP for Freak Show and just kept saying that I’d listen to the other tracks later and then heard one of the boys in my crew playing it and was like “what’s that?” and of course I already had it. Typical. Great tune. One of my Die faves.

Well, if you weren’t at Smart Bar last night, you kinda missed out. I really had a good time. Awesome music. Lots of people dancing and having fun. Even I danced a couple of times which is pretty much of unheard of lately. 😉 Fun times. It was that feeling that I want shows to have that we never seem to have anymore since we don’t seem to be recruiting new people to the scene. Last night was a good sign though so big ups Midway.

Weekend. Yay. Going to Milwaukee on saturday to hang out with my buddy Mollie. I’m excited to see her. She lives in L.A. but has to go to Milwaukee for some work thing so I’m going to drive there on saturday and kick it.

Soul Mosaic (Redeyes & Youthman) – Listen To Your Heart Love this one! It’s the 9th release on Blu Saphir. I’m just starting to know about Youthman. The French are killing it. Seriously.

Yeh yeh, I know another Redeyes. Can’t help it. Love the stuff he’s doing right now. He’s dope. I could add more tracks by him but that’s just silly. 😉

Today’s Oldie:

Dj Krust – Freak Show – Full Cycle Records 2000 This track is great! It’s really easy to imagine a freak show with this bassline. Is it weird to say it’s a tasteful clownstep track? It’s totally not annoying and is really fun to mix. Whenever I play it I mostly just ride out the mix cuz it emphasizes all the elements beautifully while in the mix.

Bass Goes Boom tonight. Haven’t been for a hot minute. Should be fun to get my dubstep fix on.

I was telling Stunna yesterday that I’ve totally been in a lazy funk. At first I was annoyed and stressed for a couple of weeks and now I’m just lazy. I decided to snap out of it yesterday and I’m in full form again. I went crazy listening to dnb and am back to full on post it note scrawled pieces of paper form. I have tracks to talk about and I actually went out. Holla.

It was dubstep night at Seminar. Chicago’s dubstep scene really is fire. Nameloc and Borja are on some other shit with their production. Loves it!

Yesterday was pretty fucking cool. Yay Obama! I know people don’t like it when you stuff politics down their throats so that’s all I’m going to say about it. 🙂

I’m actually considering going to Lava tonight. I said considering… LOL. I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. Raving out just doesn’t seem to be on my agenda these days. I really have to get my rowdy ass in gear. I will be attending Junglefly on thursday though so that should make up for it. Anything that has the headline “a liquid funk dnb revival session!” you know I’ll be at.

I gotta catch up on some mixes so I don’t have any new tunes to chat about today. I’ve been procrastinating again… Surprise surprise. There must be some deep seeded issue that I’m not dealing with cuz I’ve been taking procrastinating to a whole new level lately!

M-Beat feat. General Levy – Incredible – Renk 1994 I couldn’t have an oldie section without putting this track in there. I remember hearing this track non stop when I was in London. It was fucking everywhere. If you didn’t like it, they were going to make you like it. LOL. Does anyone actually know what General Levy is saying besides “wicked wicked junglist massive” and “incredible?” You know that you can rely on me to make up a bunch of lyrics. 😉

I downloaded this podcast ages ago but only actually got to listen to it last night. Really great tracks. I was completely entranced as I was listening to it.

Today’s Oldie:  Shy FX feat. Gunsmoke – Gangsta Kid – S.O.U.R 1993 Oh man.  Amazing.  The skit in the beginning of this is priceless.  I remember listening to this on the regular.  This is even before I started mixing.  My jungle collection basically consisted of Kool FM tapes and these random jungle CD compilations.  This track was on every compilation.  It was so representative of the jungle rudebwoy culture and I love that ragga jungle vibe.  I can still see all the boys in the club with their gun dance shuffle.  Awesome.  Shy FX is wicked.

Before I had this blog I had a livejournal account. I actually still have it. I just don’t really write in it. I’ve had it for 7 years. The reason I stopped writing in it was because I found that I wrote way too much detail in it. Yikes. I mean if you want to know what was going on with me for the past 7 years just read that shit. LOL. It was definitely more of a Dear Diary… style than this blog. I actually quite fond of this blog that I have now. I talk a lot and need to get my thoughts out some way or another so I like that I babble about myself for a paragraph or so and then talk about drum n bass. Before I was just talking about myself for pages and pages and trust me, as crazy as I am no one really cares that much about my life and a paragraph of details is just enough. 🙂

Happy Halloween!

My friends Ron & Rocko are having a Halloween party and everyone’s dressing up so I guess I will have to also.  Being a British kid there really wasn’t any trick or treating and dressing up going on so adopting this habit so late in life seems so silly but whatever.  I will find the cheapest accessories possible and be dressed up.  No one likes to be the only one not dressed up do they?

I used to have a ridiculous obsession with all types of sweets.  I would eat them constantly instead of real food but now that I’m health conscious and whatever I pretty much don’t indulge in them too much.  The only sweet I really can’t give up is ice cream and even that I have given in and buy the low fat no sugar kind… yep I’m boring.  Today though, in honour of all trick or treaters everywhere I will be stuffing my face with copious amounts of sugar. 😉

Today’s Oldie:  Marcus Intalex & ST Files – How You Make Me Feel – 31 Records 1999 This track is so lovely.  I still play it quite frequently.  Great vocal.  Lovely flow to the bassline.  One of my Marcus Intalex faves for sure.

I had downloaded a set the other day and was really excited to listen to it, then once I started I heard some emcee babbling away and it ruined everything. I was quite bummed because the tracklist of the set looked pretty good and it was one of my fave djs. When I used to go to raves I was really into the emcee, that’s if they were good anyway. There was a whole different element to hyping up the party. Now, I’m sure it’s cuz I’m older, but I just have no desire to hear someone who can’t emcee properly mumbling over tracks. It doesn’t hype up the party and it’s just annoying. My dnb life today is very different from the one in the late 90’s. Now I just go to cute little intimate bars and hear my friends mix and have a drink… definitely not prime environment for someone yelling loudly with bad rhymes. I used to like a ton of emcees and now I like about 3. LOL. I just want someone who chats little but when they do say something it’s awesome and actually complements the dj’s set. That may seem like not that much to ask but the way emcees are today you’re lucky if you get it.

I will end this rant now. I just was super annoyed at the emcee i heard ruining the mix.

Today’s Oldie: Pendulum – Still Grey – Timeless Recordings 2004 I was gonna put Another Planet as today’s oldie but both me and Submorphics agreed it was too obvious. Still Grey is an awesome track. Remember when everyone was Pendulum obsessed? Rightfully so. You gotta give props where props is due and they gave a new energy to dnb for a minute. Good track.

Yes! I finally feel like myself again. I’ve had a really crappy two weeks. I’ve just been a stroppy cow and felt pretty miserable and had family issues and money issues… Life basically has not been going my way. You know how it goes, you wallow in it for a bit and then you realise that there isn’t really anything you can do so you snap out of it and continue trudging along.

Today’s Oldie: Dj Red – Uprise – Trouble On Vinyl 1997  Trouble On Vinyl was a force to be reckoned with back in the day. I have a lot of tracks from that label. This track is amazing. Everything about it is awesome. I love the way the bassline creeps in and rises when you’re in the mix. I love the way the bassline rolls and swallows you whole when you’re just listening to it. Such a classic. I have a tape pack from back then where everyone mixes all the same tracks like they used to and no matter who mixed it, every time the track comes on you can hear the crowd going nuts. True anthem style. I didn’t own the record and when I wanted it took me forever to find it but now I finally own it and I’m a happy camper. Loves it.
