Back In Business

Miserable ToddlerI’ve felt like that crabby baby to the right for the past seven days. Fortunately I no longer feel that way. I’m not 100% but I at least don’t feel like I’m about to keel over and die.

All in all I had a pretty good weekend. I got all hopped up on meds and went to Bass Goes Boom on friday. Man, if you live in Chicago and you love dubstep and don’t go to this night, you’re crazy. Chef absolutely killed it. That night is really fun. It was nice to see Mike too both him and Tim threw down as well.

I finally went to the apple store and invested in a new ipod dock. Yay. I managed to get to work today with not a single person saying a word to me… just how I like it. I definitely have missed my ipod. Welcome back buddy.

Since I’ve been sick my equilibrium is all off and my hearing was all fucked up and I’ve had a really hard time mixing but I’m happy to say that my hearing has returned slightly. Not fully, but enough that I at least don’t feel like I’m sitting in a tin can. I’m playing at Lava on wednesday for the Random Movement show and it should be an interesting set to say the least.  The night will include 3 of my favourite things so it really can’t end up being that horrid, 1) My friends 2) Drum n Bass 3) Lava. 😉

Found this Doc Scott Mix. Everyone on Breaksblog seems to be raving about it so hopefully it’s enjoyable.

I still haven’t gotten a new ipod dock. The apple store is downtown and I just Mr. Belvedere haven’t had time to get there yet. It’s my loss. My ipod died two days ago since it hasn’t been charged. It’s a bonus that I get to listen to music on the way to work but I also use my ipod to deter people from talking to me. Of course the second I don’t have my ipod, yesterday 2 homeless people hit on me and today a white man who looked like Mr. Belvedere and was at least 68 asked me out for coffee. Go figure. I guess it’s nice to know that I attract all kinds. 😉

I was listening to Overfiend’s show on Bassdrive yesterday and there were sooooo many good cuts. I was feeling quite ill (and still am but am at work cuz I’m a trooper) but at least I got to listen to good music. I’m such a nerd I wrote down the key songs I was digging. I totally have a notebook where I keep songs that I hear and would like to get when they come out. Geeky? Yes indeed.

Dan Marshall – Word’s Can’t Explain: I’ve heard this song a lot lately. The vocal is awesome.

Submorphics – Desperate Times: I’m biased. Greg is friend of mine but I actually was a fan of his music before we became friends. I played Make It Happen (the mp3’s are switched so if you wanna hear Make It Happen click on the Young Ax tune) so much that I need a new copy.

Paul SG – Bright Soul: Am I horrible for not knowing who he is? Well I know him now. He has some awesome stuff. There was another track that he has with Calculon that I loved as well, Part of Me, which was pretty dope too.

Bachelors of Science – Beautiful Life: Not really much to say here. BOS always have great stuff. I’m a big fan of theirs.

I just picked up that Makoto and Marky Rush Hour EP. Loving Get 2 This.

The workload has subsided a little so I’m just enjoying listening to music and focusing on revisions. Bailey opens his set up with our favourite dreadlocked wonder Will Miles and also has some serious action with my newest dnb obsession, Survival (yeh yeh yeh, I’m late jumping on the bandwagon) I’m twenty minutes in and already lovin it.  I guess I can tolerate Bailey’s love of the clown for a DNAudio set. 🙂

Is that the plural of tracheotomy?  Well whatever it is I need one.  My throat is totally wack right now.  I never get sick and I feel like I’ve been poorly on and off for the past month or so.  Extremely lame.

I’m totally swamped at work and have been looking for things to do to procrastinate cuz I’m feeling too whiny to work but I can’t even get into the Bassdrive chat room which sucks cuz Overfiend is totally killing it right now and I would love to add my 2cents and waste the day away bantering with Ju Ju. 😦 (wow.  awesome run on sentence.)

I guess I’ll just be a good worker and complain about my throat to myself.

Sometimes the only thing that makes sense to me is drum and bass. I know that sounds really corny but I can’t help it, it’s true.

I’ve got a really jumbled up brain. I have ADD pretty bad. It’s some how morphed into what I guess they now call Adult ADD. When I was younger I used to go to therapy for my ADD because I can’t concentrate, EVER, and it used to stress me out. The funny thing is now I’m older and instead of getting stressed out I just space out. It’s become pretty bad. If my brain becomes overloaded and I can’t take it anymore I just tune everything out and go into la la land. Trust me it’s a lot better if I don’t do it around other people because I’ve noticed that people tend to find it rude if you don’t pay attention when they are trying to tell you something. 😉

Anyways, I’m completely swamped at work. It’s a bit overwhelming. I have til the end of the week to complete my tasks and I’m not being pressured at all but at the same time when someone hands you 35 case files I think it’s natural to panic a bit.

So basically I’m tuning out the rest of the world and listening to dnb while I work diligently, silently saying my dnb prayers.

I decided to post this State of Mind mix because I’ve actually never listened to their installments of the next level show. When Sun King came out I was all about them and then I let them slip by the wayside. I don’t know what they’re up to these days but maybe I’ll find out after I listen to this mix.

I was thinking the other day about how many awesome tracks have been coming out lately.  There is just a really great group of producers out there right now making amazing stuff and it’s nice that it’s not just the usual suspects.  One person I’m really digging is Naibu from France.  I already picked up that Nami Island and I’m loving that Back Engineering.  Another group I’ve been turned on to is L.A.O.S. out of Finland.  I had a release that I picked up on one of those days that I was just itching to spend money and couldn’t find anything to buy and I quite liked it but never got anything else by them.  Right now though I’m totally into that Helsinki track of theirs.

I was listening to Brandy the other day and was thinking about how she is totally the dnb sample favourite.  LOL.  There are shitload of dnb tracks that sample her vocals.  TeeBee has two tracks that I love that use snippets of her tracks and there’s also a song on this Calculon mix below that samples “I Wanna Be Down.”  The vocal rifts on that song are very dnb compatible….. “And if I don’t let you know then I won’t be for real.”

I’ve been digging this Calculon mix.  It’s Rubik Records‘ Podcast number 10 and it’s just an all round good mix.  Rubik Records have a good podcast.  Stunna was on number 8.  You can download his installment at www.rubikpodcast.com.

I’m pretty content today, nice weather, good music, can’t really complain.

Remember that Queen song?  Classic.

I have so much fun listening to online radio at work.  I tune into Bassdrive.  I listen to 1xtra.  It’s great to be able to actually hear music you like on the radio.  I just listen to the regular everyday shows on 1xtra and the djs are great and the music is well rounded and good.  Radio in America…  I really don’t have anything good to say about it.  It’s so fucking rubbish.  I can’t even remember the last time I turned on the radio in my car.  It’s all terrible.  Thank god for the internet.

I bought some more records today. *shakes head* I’m a pretty disciplined adult.  I’m really responsible about budgeting and all that shit.  Then payday comes and it all goes out the window cuz all I wanna do is spend my money on tracks.

Still in same ipod situation as yesterday, so I don’t really have any new mixes to big up.  I’ve just been steady listening to Bassdrive cuz you can’t go wrong there. 😉

Sometimes my mind gets lost in music world and I’m not quite sure what it is that I really want to listen to. My 17 year love affair with dnb is still going strong but there are days where I don’t feel like listening to it. Also I stepped on my ipod dock and broke it and now I can’t put any new mixes on there until i go get a new one. Surprisingly I still am shocked that the ipod isn’t broken yet but the dock isn’t expensive to replace so I don’t mind paying for a new one. So basically I’ve been listening to the same mixes all week…. *shudder* “Oh the horror!”

I do know that silence isn’t one of my choices of what to listen to though. Not that I have a problem with silence, (others may beg to differ since I am that person that never shuts up) I just think that it’s nice to have music as a soundtrack to tedious activities. Since activities that one usually takes part in during the work day are usually tedious, music is a welcomed addition.

My best friend’s wife made a comment once about how I always have to have music on and I was genuinely shocked that she found it strange. I guess I never think that other people don’t automatically put music on when they have a free moment. I just assumed that’s what everybody does it since I do know that there aren’t many people who don’t like music. I don’t have any stats on that but I feel like it’s safe to make that assumption.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Roll Deep today. Don’t ask me why because I don’t have a proper answer. *shrugs* Sometimes you just have to be ruff and tuff and become a grime emcee I guess. “Celebrate That” is one of my faves. I’m actually looking forward to the Bass Goes Boom show next weekend with Chef. I haven’t been in town for the last two so it’ll be nice to make an appearance.

Anyways I guess dubstep is the genre choice for the afternoon a la Plastician and Nomad.

It’s Jazzy

I totally didn’t know Zero T had an album coming out. That’s definitely something to look forward to. I haven’t finished listening to that Bailey mix but I liked what I heard so far. Something I didn’t like on the mix though was that Nu:Tone “It’s Jazzy” remix. It’s the fifth track in. Eek. I like Nu:Tone but that track is very sacred to me. It was one of the first records I ever bought and one of the first ones I learned to match beats with and I just don’t think that remix does it justice. 😦 On a nicer note though I really do like Balaclava. That’s a sweet track.

I saw that Ill Logic & Raf have a new track coming on Double Zero Recordings. Be Free/Smash Daddy. I think I missed the promo round but hopefully will pick up the full release. I miss Ill Logic & Raf. I was a big fan of the Syracuse EP.  I’m glad they’ve got some new stuff coming out.

Found this Dan Marshall mix. I’m not as crazy about that “Crazy” track as everyone else is but I do like some of his other stuff.

Pretty chill day today, just working diligently and listening to music. Depressed about the weather going back to 55 degrees but I’m not gonna harp about it. Sometimes there is such thing as too much complaining. 😉

Windex Used To Be My Best Friend…

I’ve been really enjoying these days off. I have the apartment to myself as my roomate is out of town and I’m actually just loving the alone time.

My place reached a point where even after you straighten up it still seems dirty so I’ve been doing a thorough cleaning. I went to the supermarket and got really into buying all these great supplies. I used to just use windex to clean everything in my apartment when I was like 19. Now I’m super into the results of new cleaning supplies. Mildew remover, lysol bathroom cleaner, clorox disinfectant wipes, vanish, the list is endless but the end result is a shiny, happy clean place. It’s so clean I almost don’t want to touch anything. Hee hee.

The best part about cleaning was that I got to listen to mix after mix after mix. I think I’m all caught up now. Side note, that Marcus Intalex mix is a great mix to clean your place to!! So is that Sabre Pyro mix. There’s a Survival tune on the Sabre mix that I’m really digging but Sabre doesn’t say the name of it so I guess I’ll just have to hope I hear it again some time soon.

I was cleaning for so long I started running out of mixes that I wanted listen to so I started go back looking for old gems that I had downloaded but never listened to. I found the Bcee Spearhead podcast from March and it’s lovely. It has some bits from Redeyes’ upcoming album. I was quite in love with his track “I Live” on Creative Source. There’s also some stuff from the Moodswings LP on there. I really do like Spearhead Records. They have some really good releases.

I also saw that Zero T was on Bailey’s show on 1xtra, so I’ll definitely be checking that one out.

I Have Zero Tolerance… For This Weather

I slept well last night and I’ve totally done everything I need to do so I’m feeling quite serene today. Also I’m excited at the prospect of 77 degrees on sunday and having three days off in a row.

Even though I post mixes everyday I don’t really get time to listen to all of them on that day and then we have the whole problem of me constantly listening to things on repeat so sometimes it takes a while to get through all of them. I’m currently stuck on that Dj Presha mix I posted last week. That’s a good one. 🙂

I’m also loving “Creatures of Habit” on the D-Bridge album. I’m not writing a review on the album. It’s good. Go get it. I didn’t really start this blog to review stuff, I’m not a music journalist. It’s just a soundboard to talk about my love of dnb. I think I was just so excited to finally receive my Calibre album that just I wanted to talk about it, so I wrote a review on it.

It’s grey outside and I’m over it. I’m in a pretty melody, cozy, lay on your couch and think about shit mood… Obviously since I’m at work, I’ll have to improvise. I’ve decided Zero Tolerance is just the guy to be the soundtrack to this setting. All of his collaborations are just so pretty. I don’t know what I’d do if someone told me I wasn’t allowed to use the word pretty to describe liquid funk! 😉

I’m a huge Zero T fan. One of my favourite tracks is Refusal. I also really really love Round Table. I found this mix and I’ve got no idea who it’s mixed by but it’s all Zero T tracks so it serves the purpose.
