Nod Your Head

There was definitely a lot of head nodding going on last night.  I really had a good time at Seminar.  Great music.  Pipeline and Stunna were killing it.  I definitely admit that I’m quite spoiled when it comes to dnb.  My really good friends are part of the dnb game so I pretty much get to hear exactly what I want when they are around.  Stunna played this Lenzman banger that I still can’t get out of my head.  Sorry I forgot the name.  (I’m absolutely horrible with track names)  I’ll definitely be waiting for that one.

I’m a little bit out of it this morning.  I’m really tired.  I barely slept.  I did manage to find time to spend too much money buying records this morning though.  Always gotta make time for that right? One of the treats I picked up was a copy of this Mutt record that I’ve wanted that’s finally back in stock – Nice As Me/Strangers.  I was pretty excited about that.

I’m yawning alot which obviously means that my brain is need of a LOT of oxygen.  I’m not going to waste time babbling about nonsense.  I just found this Flight w/ Deeizm mix which I hope will keep me awake.

Sappy McSapperson

I’ve been listening to that Blame on Charge Recordings that I posted about recently, Stay Forever. I feel like it’s a good way to start your morning.

Speaking of Charge, can we talk about how much I used to love “Feel Good?” Those were the good old days. I don’t really listen to much of Mampi’s stuff anymore though. You’ll have to get me to tell you the story one time of driving back from a crazy outdoor rave with him and R Notorious J and Skibba with Mampi driving my roomates car… Priceless.

Anyways, moving on. I was thinking about how most pretty vocal dnb tracks have super sappy lyrics. High Contrast’s – Eternal Optimist is one of my personal faves. I think that song is so pretty. I think the girly pretty nature of most liquid funk tracks is why some people tend to hate on it so much. *shrugs*

If you were to look at my music history, the back catalogue definitely shows that I would invest in sappy dnb songs in the future. I used to listen to a lot of sappy R&B songs. I probably still would if I actually listened to the radio or watched videos but since dnb and dubstep take up most of my time I don’t know any new mainstream R&B artists. Word on the street is that they’re rubbish anyways. Bummer.

I remember being twelve and getting ready to move to America and having to leave this boy who i had just started making out with. Of course being twelve, I was convinced my life was over since I didn’t want to move to America in the first place. I listened to Karyn White’s Superwoman over and over and over (see this caning tracks to death thing isn’t new to me) to assuage my discontent with the move. Pretty dnb does the same thing for me now. Not necessarily in assuaging making out with boys but appeasing my occasional discontent with life in general. 😉

Stunna’s my main man when it comes to pretty dnb mixes. He switches it up every now and again but I’ve got a ton of old mixes to keep me happy. For those of you that live in Chicago he’ll being playing with Pipeline at Seminar tonight so you should stop by.

Here’s a little old jam loveliness to keep you busy.

Super Sharp Shooter

I’m waiting for my Danny Byrd Supersized EP. I think it comes out next week. Danny Byrd, for me, is my jump up dnb. It always makes me feel rowdy and I love it. I totally feel like it livens up my sets and they are good transition tracks when your trying to go from pretty to dance floor bangers. To be honest I haven’t really bought anything from Hospital Records in a while. I used to be all about them. Any release I was so on it! Maybe I’ve just gotten more boring ( I don’t know how that could possibly happen because I’m boring enough as it is already) and can’t keep up with status quo. *shrugs*

A duo I love to include in my “jump up” collection is Marky and Bungle. I remember having a conversation with Pipeline and we were talking about how crazy it is that their remixes are so fire! Seriously. I have to be pretty amped up to dance these days but I will totally dance to a Marky and Bungle remix. That Q Project Tears Remix was so awesome and, I still totally love that Dj ZincHear No Evil Remix.

Talking about jump up totally makes me think of how different those old jungle days were. I was seriously True Playaz / Ganja Records til I die. Peace, Love and Unity!! Those ravin’ days were so fun. I remember trying to learn to do tricks with Super Sharp Shooter. I guess the clownstep lovers would argue that clownstep is the jump up of today. I beg to differ. I think those songs of yesteryear can’t even compare to the horrific mess that is clownstep today. Again though, like I’ve said before, everyone is entitled to their opinion so since this is my blog I get to complain about clownstep as much as I want. 😉

Back to work.

I totally admit that I don’t really know who mSdoS is but the tracklist looks good and I kinda wanna hear the Bungle mix so it’ll do.

I Get So Weak….

I’m beat down. I’ve had this horrific cough along with numerous other annoying symptoms for like five days. I’m pretty sure I’m dying. Web MD says I might have walking pneumonia or hypersomnia. Of course I can guarantee you that I really have neither. Web MD is good for turning people into hypochondriacs.

I was running around a lot this weekend so I don’t really have much dnb to write about… Well actually let me be honest, Stunna sent me this track that him and Tyler Straub did and I’m way too into it and have just been listening to it on repeat all weekend.  That’s why I have no other dnb to write about.   It’s called So Weak and it’s dope. I don’t remember being able to go anywhere in 1993 without hearing that SWV song so I’ve become a wee bit obsessed. Sorry but I don’t have a sample to give you right now.

I did get my D-Bridge : Gemini Principle LP so at least I accomplished something.

I’m still ailing and feeling a bit lazy so I’m just gonna listen to this SabreShogun Audio Mix on Pyro Radio and dream about not having hypersomnia and walking pneumonia.

Let Me Tell You What I Don’t Want To Hear…

Eek. So I went to Digital last night. I actually just wanted to go hang out with my friends so I didn’t really expect anything spectacular. For the first hour it was actually ok. Nothing horrible. And then I had to go open my big mouth. I just got done saying to Stunna how the music wasn’t bad and then a clownerific tune accosted my ears. Woah. After the first impact it was just clown mania. I don’t even understand what happened. Everything was fine and then it was clownstep track after clownstep track. My friends started leaving one after another. I left soon after that.

Seriously, what is the deal with clownstep? It’s not good and you know it. This isn’t even about me being a liquid funk lover. I just love good tracks, whatever genre they are. Am I a music snob because I ask to hear good music? I guess so.

Enough about bad music.

I’ve got a horrible cough, I can’t stop sneezing, I’m just gonna listen to an older Redeyes mix and pretend to do some work.

Greed

“excessive or rapacious desire, esp. for wealth or possessions.”

Ooh rapacious is a good word. I’m feeling pretty greedy about records these days. I want all of them. I can definitely not justify buying them but I’ll probably reach some compromise that only makes sense to me and then be satisfied.

Going to Seminar tonight. Can’t honestly say I know anything about Digital’s new stuff. I’m a lush, I can’t pass up drinks and hanging out with my friends so I’ll go regardless. Whenever I think about Digital I just go back to the Waterhouse Dub days where I played the fuck out of that record. I really love that track. I should try and get a new copy cuz I know for a fact that mine makes that horrible clacking sound.

DnB Overload! Pt. 3

I told you there were a lot of mixes. 🙂

BBS Bookings has an awesome podcast. You should subscribe to it on itunes. Just search for BBS Bookings and it should come up. They are currently on #9. It features Radiata with Entro MC. Recently on BBP we had this “discussion” about emcees. I love Entro. He totally understands the art of when to be quiet to enjoy the track and when to hype up the dj and the crowd. There’s a lot of emcees that follow that path and that’s great. Unfortunately there’s a lot that don’t do that at all. I’m not gonna harp on this topic. In a nutshell… SHUT UP, I can’t hear the track. 😉

DnB Overload! Pt. 2

Continuing with the dnb mayhem… It’s funny how dnb phrases always seem to allude to some kind of chaos. 1) drum and bass in your face! — that’s my personal favourite. 2) dnb extravaganza! 3) dnb maelstrom! Hmmm, maybe I’m the only one that uses those terms since I am the ultimate nerd. 😉

Alley Cat. Alicia is one of the coolest people ever. I get happy when I get to listen to one of her mixes cuz she’s a really great dj. I’m always saying to my roomate how I love it when you get to be in the presence of genuinely awesome people. I know that sounds cheesy but it just doesn’t happen often enough so whenever it does, I tend to gush.

DnB Overload! Pt. 1

I woke up this morning and just knew it was gonna be a good day. It’s rare when that happens. It’s almost like all the planets have to be aligned or something just to make sure that it does. I actually slept really well. I went running. I had a good breakfast. I watched some tivo. I replaced all the mixes on my ipod cuz it was about that time and I checked all the new releases to see if there was anything I wanted to buy. All this before I left for work at 8:05a.m. Not bad huh?

The only annoying thing that happened this morning was it was one of those times where people won’t stop staring at you. I know you’ve all had those days. I spent my train ride staring at the floor and pretending to focus on the mix I was listening to cuz there were like 4 people that were being totally relentless about it. It’s weird cuz I’m like, I see you staring… You’re looking right at me so how do you think I’m not going to see you??? At least I have the decency to master the art of secretly staring at someone. It would be nice if others learned to do the same! 😉 It makes you think that something is wrong with you and it’s totally bothersome so please stop doing it. I double checked the mirror when I got to work and there wasn’t anything wrong with me. No hair out of place, no food on my shirt, no random unidentifiable objects on my face. Maybe I was giving off the aura of being in a good mood and they could sense it and were annoyed. Everyone knows that a majority of people that are on their way to work at 8 a.m. are probably not happy about it. *end of rant*

Back to dnb… 🙂 It was like Christmas for me this morning cuz I managed to find a bunch of mixes that I actually was excited to listen to. I hadn’t checked out the new Marcus Intalex yet. My buddy Stunna said it was a must download and once I realised D-Bridge was on it too, it was a no-brainer. Right now I’m really digging that D-Bridge remix of “Dream World.” It’s on that Aaron Jay Mix I posted before.

Ravin’

Flight – Live @ Swerve

Just in the process of listening to this one but I’m sure it’ll be wicked cuz Flight doesn’t disappoint.

Had a pretty good weekend. Makoto was in town. Really good show. I must say that I’m really into my Chicago dnb scene. I may harp on about being old but it’s just that I think I would be pretty miserable if my city’s dnb scene was ravetastic. I really am not that into partying with young people and being around a million people at a time. I have reached the age where me and an eighteen year old really have nothing in common, so partying with one would seem pretty silly. I think it’s nice to be in my thirties and be able to go to an intimate bar, listen to music I like on a nice sound system, have a drink and be around my friends. I know that other people wanna hype it up and rave til the break of dawn but that totally sounds nightmarish to me. To each his own, right?

I’m kinda swamped with work today so this mini post will have to do. Be prepared for more of my “eye-opening” (kidding of course) dnb ramblings tomorrow.

Toodles

P.S.  My day just got a lot cooler because this Peyo track that I’ve been in love with for ages just came out.  🙂

Drum n Bass · Mixes

Mixes

I am not ridiculously gadget oriented. I like them but I’m clumsy and I break stuff all the time so there’s no use in getting excited about a new toy when I know there’s a 98.27% chance it’ll be broken soon. Where am I going with this? My ipod. No it’s not broken. I just have a shuffle and I got that for a Christmas present from my boss cuz I can guarantee you that I wouldn’t buy one. Surprisingly I still have it 2 years later. The only reason it’s not broken is because it’s obviously drop proof… made up word alert. Thanks folks, my dictionary will be out next year. I drop that thing at least six times a day. I’m surprised I haven’t stepped on it. I’m babbling. Basically I love my ipod because I can store mixes on it. I don’t have a single lone song on my ipod which most of my non-electronic music loving friends find quite funny. It’s just chocablock full of mixes. When I used to bring my ipod to work at Adidas, I would put on some songs that I wouldn’t mind hearing at work so I could join the ipod rotation but now that I only work there once a week, I put the kibosh on that plan and now it’s mix city!

To keep up with my dnb obsession I am constantly in need of mixes to listen to. Breaksblog definitely takes care of that for me. There’s always a ton of good mixes on there. Another one I’ve recently started frequenting is Drum & Bass Links cuz not only do they have loads of mixes but they also have good variety. To be honest I go all over. I’ve become pretty adept at searching for mixes so even though those two are my regular go-to sites I tend to go anywhere and everywhere cuz I’m a fiend.

One mix I’ve had on heavy rotation is Aaron Jay’s April mix for Breaksblog. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve actually not been too happy with the past few Aaron Jay mixes. Last year I feel like they were really good and I would download without hesitation and then they just got really bloody boring. The tracklist would look decent and then I would find myself fast forwarding through the mix. This one I’m really into though. The tracklist is nice and it’s just an all round nice public transportation mix. I would never dream of driving my car to work as I work downtown so the ratings for most mixes that I put on my ipod are on a “public transportation mix” scale. We’ll have to get to the “partying at my house while doing laundry or pretending to clean” scale some other day.

Enjoy.
