Music Melee

Sometimes my mind gets lost in music world and I’m not quite sure what it is that I really want to listen to. My 17 year love affair with dnb is still going strong but there are days where I don’t feel like listening to it. Also I stepped on my ipod dock and broke it and now I can’t put any new mixes on there until i go get a new one. Surprisingly I still am shocked that the ipod isn’t broken yet but the dock isn’t expensive to replace so I don’t mind paying for a new one. So basically I’ve been listening to the same mixes all week…. *shudder* “Oh the horror!”

I do know that silence isn’t one of my choices of what to listen to though. Not that I have a problem with silence, (others may beg to differ since I am that person that never shuts up) I just think that it’s nice to have music as a soundtrack to tedious activities. Since activities that one usually takes part in during the work day are usually tedious, music is a welcomed addition.

My best friend’s wife made a comment once about how I always have to have music on and I was genuinely shocked that she found it strange. I guess I never think that other people don’t automatically put music on when they have a free moment. I just assumed that’s what everybody does it since I do know that there aren’t many people who don’t like music. I don’t have any stats on that but I feel like it’s safe to make that assumption.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Roll Deep today. Don’t ask me why because I don’t have a proper answer. *shrugs* Sometimes you just have to be ruff and tuff and become a grime emcee I guess. “Celebrate That” is one of my faves. I’m actually looking forward to the Bass Goes Boom show next weekend with Chef. I haven’t been in town for the last two so it’ll be nice to make an appearance.

Anyways I guess dubstep is the genre choice for the afternoon a la Plastician and Nomad.

Crabtastic

I’m quite the miserable cow today. I had a crap night last night and don’t really have anything exciting to say.

Don’t know the dj on the mix but I do like Dkay, so that’s enough for me to take a listen. I have an unnecessarily large pic of Dkay that my old roomate Kali blew up and printed on my bookcase in my place…. bah come on, we think he’s cute! πŸ˜‰

It’s Jazzy

I totally didn’t know Zero T had an album coming out. That’s definitely something to look forward to. I haven’t finished listening to that Bailey mix but I liked what I heard so far. Something I didn’t like on the mix though was that Nu:Tone “It’s Jazzy” remix. It’s the fifth track in. Eek. I like Nu:Tone but that track is very sacred to me. It was one of the first records I ever bought and one of the first ones I learned to match beats with and I just don’t think that remix does it justice. 😦 On a nicer note though I really do like Balaclava. That’s a sweet track.

I saw that Ill Logic & Raf have a new track coming on Double Zero Recordings. Be Free/Smash Daddy. I think I missed the promo round but hopefully will pick up the full release. I miss Ill Logic & Raf. I was a big fan of the Syracuse EP.Β  I’m glad they’ve got some new stuff coming out.

Found this Dan Marshall mix. I’m not as crazy about that “Crazy” track as everyone else is but I do like some of his other stuff.

Pretty chill day today, just working diligently and listening to music. Depressed about the weather going back to 55 degrees but I’m not gonna harp about it. Sometimes there is such thing as too much complaining. πŸ˜‰

Windex Used To Be My Best Friend…

I’ve been really enjoying these days off. I have the apartment to myself as my roomate is out of town and I’m actually just loving the alone time.

My place reached a point where even after you straighten up it still seems dirty so I’ve been doing a thorough cleaning. I went to the supermarket and got really into buying all these great supplies. I used to just use windex to clean everything in my apartment when I was like 19. Now I’m super into the results of new cleaning supplies. Mildew remover, lysol bathroom cleaner, clorox disinfectant wipes, vanish, the list is endless but the end result is a shiny, happy clean place. It’s so clean I almost don’t want to touch anything. Hee hee.

The best part about cleaning was that I got to listen to mix after mix after mix. I think I’m all caught up now. Side note, that Marcus Intalex mix is a great mix to clean your place to!! So is that Sabre Pyro mix. There’s a Survival tune on the Sabre mix that I’m really digging but Sabre doesn’t say the name of it so I guess I’ll just have to hope I hear it again some time soon.

I was cleaning for so long I started running out of mixes that I wanted listen to so I started go back looking for old gems that I had downloaded but never listened to. I found the Bcee Spearhead podcast from March and it’s lovely. It has some bits from Redeyes’ upcoming album. I was quite in love with his track “I Live” on Creative Source. There’s also some stuff from the Moodswings LP on there. I really do like Spearhead Records. They have some really good releases.

I also saw that Zero T was on Bailey’s show on 1xtra, so I’ll definitely be checking that one out.

Hopefully it’s nice and sunny wherever you are and you can enjoy the holiday.

Toodles

I Have Zero Tolerance… For This Weather

I slept well last night and I’ve totally done everything I need to do so I’m feeling quite serene today. Also I’m excited at the prospect of 77 degrees on sunday and having three days off in a row.

Even though I post mixes everyday I don’t really get time to listen to all of them on that day and then we have the whole problem of me constantly listening to things on repeat so sometimes it takes a while to get through all of them. I’m currently stuck on that Dj Presha mix I posted last week. That’s a good one. πŸ™‚

I’m also loving “Creatures of Habit” on the D-Bridge album. I’m not writing a review on the album. It’s good. Go get it. I didn’t really start this blog to review stuff, I’m not a music journalist. It’s just a soundboard to talk about my love of dnb. I think I was just so excited to finally receive my Calibre album that just I wanted to talk about it, so I wrote a review on it.

It’s grey outside and I’m over it. I’m in a pretty melody, cozy, lay on your couch and think about shit mood… Obviously since I’m at work, I’ll have to improvise. I’ve decided Zero Tolerance is just the guy to be the soundtrack to this setting. All of his collaborations are just so pretty. I don’t know what I’d do if someone told me I wasn’t allowed to use the word pretty to describe liquid funk! πŸ˜‰

I’m a huge Zero T fan. One of my favourite tracks is Refusal. I also really really love Round Table. I found this mix and I’ve got no idea who it’s mixed by but it’s all Zero T tracks so it serves the purpose.

Nod Your Head

There was definitely a lot of head nodding going on last night.Β  I really had a good time at Seminar.Β  Great music.Β  Pipeline and Stunna were killing it.Β  I definitely admit that I’m quite spoiled when it comes to dnb.Β  My really good friends are part of the dnb game so I pretty much get to hear exactly what I want when they are around.Β  Stunna played this Lenzman banger that I still can’t get out of my head.Β  Sorry I forgot the name.Β  (I’m absolutely horrible with track names)Β  I’ll definitely be waiting for that one.

I’m a little bit out of it this morning.Β  I’m really tired.Β  I barely slept.Β  I did manage to find time to spend too much money buying records this morning though.Β  Always gotta make time for that right? One of the treats I picked up was a copy of this Mutt record that I’ve wanted that’s finally back in stock – Nice As Me/Strangers.Β  I was pretty excited about that.

I’m yawning alot which obviously means that my brain is need of a LOT of oxygen.Β  I’m not going to waste time babbling about nonsense.Β  I just found this Flight w/ Deeizm mix which I hope will keep me awake.

Sappy McSapperson

I’ve been listening to that Blame on Charge Recordings that I posted about recently, Stay Forever. I feel like it’s a good way to start your morning.

Speaking of Charge, can we talk about how much I used to love “Feel Good?” Those were the good old days. I don’t really listen to much of Mampi’s stuff anymore though. You’ll have to get me to tell you the story one time of driving back from a crazy outdoor rave with him and R Notorious J and Skibba with Mampi driving my roomates car… Priceless.

Anyways, moving on. I was thinking about how most pretty vocal dnb tracks have super sappy lyrics. High Contrast’s – Eternal Optimist is one of my personal faves. I think that song is so pretty. I think the girly pretty nature of most liquid funk tracks is why some people tend to hate on it so much. *shrugs*

If you were to look at my music history, the back catalogue definitely shows that I would invest in sappy dnb songs in the future. I used to listen to a lot of sappy R&B songs. I probably still would if I actually listened to the radio or watched videos but since dnb and dubstep take up most of my time I don’t know any new mainstream R&B artists. Word on the street is that they’re rubbish anyways. Bummer.

I remember being twelve and getting ready to move to America and having to leave this boy who i had just started making out with. Of course being twelve, I was convinced my life was over since I didn’t want to move to America in the first place. I listened to Karyn White’s Superwoman over and over and over (see this caning tracks to death thing isn’t new to me) to assuage my discontent with the move. Pretty dnb does the same thing for me now. Not necessarily in assuaging making out with boys but appeasing my occasional discontent with life in general. πŸ˜‰

Stunna’s my main man when it comes to pretty dnb mixes. He switches it up every now and again but I’ve got a ton of old mixes to keep me happy. For those of you that live in Chicago he’ll being playing with Pipeline at Seminar tonight so you should stop by.

Here’s a little old jam loveliness to keep you busy.

Super Sharp Shooter

I’m waiting for my Danny Byrd Supersized EP. I think it comes out next week. Danny Byrd, for me, is my jump up dnb. It always makes me feel rowdy and I love it. I totally feel like it livens up my sets and they are good transition tracks when your trying to go from pretty to dance floor bangers. To be honest I haven’t really bought anything from Hospital Records in a while. I used to be all about them. Any release I was so on it! Maybe I’ve just gotten more boring ( I don’t know how that could possibly happen because I’m boring enough as it is already) and can’t keep up with status quo. *shrugs*

A duo I love to include in my “jump up” collection is Marky and Bungle. I remember having a conversation with Pipeline and we were talking about how crazy it is that their remixes are so fire! Seriously. I have to be pretty amped up to dance these days but I will totally dance to a Marky and Bungle remix. That Q Project Tears Remix was so awesome and, I still totally love that Dj ZincHear No Evil Remix.

Talking about jump up totally makes me think of how different those old jungle days were. I was seriously True Playaz / Ganja Records til I die. Peace, Love and Unity!! Those ravin’ days were so fun. I remember trying to learn to do tricks with Super Sharp Shooter. I guess the clownstep lovers would argue that clownstep is the jump up of today. I beg to differ. I think those songs of yesteryear can’t even compare to the horrific mess that is clownstep today. Again though, like I’ve said before, everyone is entitled to their opinion so since this is my blog I get to complain about clownstep as much as I want. πŸ˜‰

Back to work.

I totally admit that I don’t really know who mSdoS is but the tracklist looks good and I kinda wanna hear the Bungle mix so it’ll do.

I Get So Weak….

I’m beat down. I’ve had this horrific cough along with numerous other annoying symptoms for like five days. I’m pretty sure I’m dying. Web MD says I might have walking pneumonia or hypersomnia. Of course I can guarantee you that I really have neither. Web MD is good for turning people into hypochondriacs.

I was running around a lot this weekend so I don’t really have much dnb to write about… Well actually let me be honest, Stunna sent me this track that him and Tyler Straub did and I’m way too into it and have just been listening to it on repeat all weekend.Β  That’s why I have no other dnb to write about.Β Β  It’s called So Weak and it’s dope. I don’t remember being able to go anywhere in 1993 without hearing that SWV song so I’ve become a wee bit obsessed. Sorry but I don’t have a sample to give you right now.

I did get my D-Bridge : Gemini Principle LP so at least I accomplished something.

I’m still ailing and feeling a bit lazy so I’m just gonna listen to this SabreShogun Audio Mix on Pyro Radio and dream about not having hypersomnia and walking pneumonia.

Dance For Me

I went to see Dizzee Rascal yesterday. 1xtra plays that Dance For Me song all the time and I love it. I’ve seen him before and I always really enjoy his shows. He’s a good live performer. I find it really strange that there are so many artists that are actually pretty bad live. It’s almost surprising when you see someone who actually puts on a good show. Other people I always think put on a great live show are The Streets and M.I.A.

EL-P was on the bill last night too. I don’t really listen to a lot of rap but I definitely like this dude’s stuff. I’ve seen him a couple of times before and he’s just an all round good rapper. It was a good show. I had fun.

Remember that Dillinja remix of Basement Jaxx feat Dizzee Rascal – Lucky Star? I really liked that one.

I’m in a dubstep mood today. I actually listen to a lot of dubstep. You know how there are some things that you just do and you don’t really blab about it that much? That’s how it is with me and dubstep. I’m a big fan of the Bass Goes Boom nights. Chef is at the next one. Should be dope.

I’ve been feeling a bit poorly this week and haven’t really been doing any work so I think I’m going to try and be a good employee today.

Let Me Tell You What I Don’t Want To Hear…

Eek. So I went to Digital last night. I actually just wanted to go hang out with my friends so I didn’t really expect anything spectacular. For the first hour it was actually ok. Nothing horrible. And then I had to go open my big mouth. I just got done saying to Stunna how the music wasn’t bad and then a clownerific tune accosted my ears. Woah. After the first impact it was just clown mania. I don’t even understand what happened. Everything was fine and then it was clownstep track after clownstep track. My friends started leaving one after another. I left soon after that.

Seriously, what is the deal with clownstep? It’s not good and you know it. This isn’t even about me being a liquid funk lover. I just love good tracks, whatever genre they are. Am I a music snob because I ask to hear good music? I guess so.

Enough about bad music.

I’ve got a horrible cough, I can’t stop sneezing, I’m just gonna listen to an older Redeyes mix and pretend to do some work.

Greed

“excessive or rapacious desire, esp. for wealth or possessions.”

Going to Seminar tonight. Can’t honestly say I know anything about Digital’s new stuff. I’m a lush, I can’t pass up drinks and hanging out with my friends so I’ll go regardless. Whenever I think about Digital I just go back to the Waterhouse Dub days where I played the fuck out of that record. I really love that track. I should try and get a new copy cuz I know for a fact that mine makes that horrible clacking sound.

Laters.

P.S. That Marcus Intalex mix is awesome.
