Turntable Nostalgia
I miss my turntables.
I never really wanted to dj. I didn’t like mixing out at first. I just really like loud electronic music and mixing records was a way to hear the tracks that I wanted to hear on a really loud sound-system. When you’re a foreign kid that moves around a lot and is always new to school, you try your hardest not to do activities that make people stare at you for long periods of time.
As time went on, I joined a bunch of great crews and started to really enjoy mixing with them and learned to like bits and pieces of the whole djing culture. Once I started graduate school, it became difficult to keep up with that lifestyle. I worked all the time and had a ton of homework so I couldn’t feasibly justify staying out til 4am. I barely sleep as it is and decided I would much rather go to bed than rave. #oldpeopleproblems
Now that I don’t mix out any more, one of my favourite pastimes is long ass bedroom mix sessions. All my stuff is at my mum’s house and I have my turntables nicely set up in my bedroom in the basement. Before I moved to Japan, I was just a jobless offspring eating all my mum’s food and would spend my time posted up in my room, doing 4, 5+ hour mixing sessions. I would be like “Ooh, lets do all Virus Recordings today,” or “This feels like a Formation Records day”.
It’s rainy out today and I really wish I could just have a marathon mix session.
I guess I’ll just listen to this mix instead.

So I made my top 25 of 2008. I feel like it’s a bit nonsense to do this because a) I cheated and just did it from May onwards cuz that’s when I started my blog and have detailed documentation of all the tracks I liked and b) I obsess over tracks so much there’s no way I like a track that I heard in May as much as I do one I like today cuz of the whole “playing on repeat constantly” factor. I hope everyone has a good New Year’s Eve. I’m just having people over my place and chillaxing. I don’t like dealing with the NYE crowd. I’m noticing that I really am slowly slipping into senior citizen status as a majority of the time I would much prefer to stay at my house and have people visit me than go out. LOL. I guess I’m just getting ready for when I get put in a nursing home.

All About Kiki
It was snowing this morning. It didn’t look like the pic above but it would have been nice if it had.
This weekend was lovely. It was all about me, me, me time. I listened to a ton of music. Cleaned my place. Made an attempt to organize my records. (a rubbish attempt at that) Wrote for a while. I’m not one of those people that doesn’t like to be alone. I definitely relish in it. I love having time to focus on what’s going on in my life and reflect on how to make myself a better person. Woh, we’re getting too deep here, lets talk about music. 😛
I had 3 mixes on heavy, heavy rotation this weekend. Really good listening. Zero T D&B TV Mix, Stunna Rubiks Podcast and the SpectraSoul Kongkast #55. On the SpectraSoul mix there is this really awesome track towards the end that’s one of their dubs called In Profile. ❤

This is probably my favourite track right now. I heard it a while ago and have been waiting to find some kind of sample to share with you but unfortunately there is none or I should just say I couldn’t find one. I pretty much stay tuned to Bassdrive hoping someone will play it. LOL. Old school style. I was totally that kid that used to do that. Just keep the radio on hoping I would hear them play the songs that I liked. (i don’t even listen to regular radio anymore so I guess I’m showing my age since radio today only rotates about 10 songs total) I’ve heard it on Dj Presha’s show and Random Movement played it last week. Sexy tune. Just sultry and melodic. I love it. Keep your ears peeled people.

When I first started listening to Offshore, I was fortunate enough to be given the first 6 or so releases all at once. This Pieter K was the one I listened to non stop. Awesome track. I’ve been having a hard time tracking down mp3s today. Finally found one on Chemical. It’s track c.

Well, if you weren’t at Smart Bar last night, you kinda missed out. I really had a good time. Awesome music. Lots of people dancing and having fun. Even I danced a couple of times which is pretty much of unheard of lately. 😉 Fun times. It was that feeling that I want shows to have that we never seem to have anymore since we don’t seem to be recruiting new people to the scene. Last night was a good sign though so big ups Midway.
Weekend. Yay. Going to Milwaukee on saturday to hang out with my buddy Mollie. I’m excited to see her. She lives in L.A. but has to go to Milwaukee for some work thing so I’m going to drive there on saturday and kick it.

Today’s Oldie:
Dj Krust – Freak Show – Full Cycle Records 2000 This track is great! It’s really easy to imagine a freak show with this bassline. Is it weird to say it’s a tasteful clownstep track? It’s totally not annoying and is really fun to mix. Whenever I play it I mostly just ride out the mix cuz it emphasizes all the elements beautifully while in the mix.
Bass Goes Boom tonight. Haven’t been for a hot minute. Should be fun to get my dubstep fix on.

Today’s Oldie: Dj Die – Autumn (Commix Remix 2004 Liquid V) I remember when I got that Planet V album. 1999 was a good year for dnb I tell ya. This album was sooooooo good. So many awesome tracks. I really liked the feel of Dj Die’s original but I remember I wasn’t really that in to the bassline. I thought it was ok but didn’t think it was up to the calibre of the essence of the track as a whole. I would just play the intro and then mix out once the bassline kicked. 5 years later, enter Commix… I love remixes that still use the same elements of the original and just enhance it by filling in blanks etc. Commix did such an awesome job with this remix. Really great track all round, both original and remix.

Chillin’
I woke up this morning with an air of serenity enveloping me. No I’m not trying to become a poet. It really was just how I felt. I’ve been steady calm for the past 7 hours. I did wake up an hour earlier than I usually do so maybe the serenity had something to do with the stillness of 4:27 a.m. Regardless, I like it.
There’s not much going on at my work today. I’m caught up for the time being.
I’ve been enjoying the mixes I’ve downloaded recently a lot. That Zetek Podcast is dope, so is that Numeral Mix and also the Ney Faustini Vandal Podcast and that Atlantic Connection Mix.
